Bass Fishing
Bass: habitat
Largemouth bass prefers warm, still, or slow-moving water: ponds, lakes, and slow rivers. It holds near structure — fallen wood, weed beds, docks. Smallmouth bass favours cooler, flowing water with rocky bottom. Both species are popular sport fish targets.
Seasonality and behaviour
Spring — spawning period; bass guard the nest and aggressively attack anything that approaches. Summer — early morning and late evening; in heat the fish hides in shade and at depth. Autumn — feeding frenzy, fish are active throughout the day. Winter — slow period, fish near the bottom with slow lures.
What triggers them
The range of bass lures is enormous: Texas and Carolina rigs with soft plastics, jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, poppers, frogs. The key is matching the lure type to water temperature and fish activity. A soft plastic on an offset hook in cover is indispensable.
Tips
- Fish along structure, not away from it: bass hold near cover.
- A Texas rig is weedless in thick vegetation — indispensable in heavy cover.
- Aggressive spring bass responds to loud, bright lures (rattlebaits).
- In heat, find shade: bass are under dams, docks, and fallen trees.
- Topwater poppers at dawn on calm water is one of the most exciting sessions.
